Working on my first food plot. |
Lead | ||
|
To start out the area I am wanting to plant is north of the Gladwin,Mi.. I have disked the area, had a soil test and just added lime. So my question is
should I plant now or wait until fall ? Or should I plant something else ? This is what it looks like now.

Totally up to you.
If you plant now any perrenials will be better established by fall but any weed seeds in the ground will start to grow and give competition to what you plant. If you're planting an anual you can wait a few months and the new growth will be a very good prefered food source. You can also till the ground a few more times until then to kill any unwanted plants that come up. Or you can plant some of each. Good luck and let us know how you make out

looks like you have it worked up good, i would plant it now and by fall you should have a nice plot that the deer are used to feeding on. what are you going to
use, plant? i helped plant one like this last year and while the broadgrasses did come back a little the clovers came in really nice and in the winter the
deer were scratching thru the snow and eating the longrass instead of the clovers

Personally I would go over it 1 or 2 more times just before planting it and I would plant it right now.....I would use a Clover blend with alot of ladino
clover in it. You can go to Walmart and get clover patch plus or to any feed store etc. Ladino is a deep root clover and will last for 5 years or so and the
other mix will have red, timothy, southern cross and a few other clovers. Those are fast growing and will protect the ladino from getting overgrazed when
initially growing.
The antler's are growing now and are done growing in the fall when you are going to plant. Plus you get them use to being on your property and they get comfortable and bed on your property as well. I think the rape turnip plots in the fall are great if you have a bunch of food plots you can plant. But if you only have a couple plots .....I would be planting for nutrition mostly and not just an attractant. Keep us posted on how your planting strategy works! |

That is a good choice and blend and it is already innoculated. Are you going to plow this up and replant in the Fall? That will make a difference in what to
plant also. Have you thought of planting something that will last for 3-5 years and then you just have to maintain?

The plan is to put in a plot that will last 3-5 years and maintain it. Then start on another one.

Well I was just taught a very important lesson on putting in food plots. Two weeks after that picture was taken I went to plant and the field was so green I
couldn't believe it. So I went back with round up and killed off the field. I will be doing that again in a week or so then I will plant in mid August. So
the lesson is make sure you kill off the area you plan to plant.

Did you ever get your food plot done in the Middle of August? If so...how is it doing?

I finally got the plot planted Labor Day weekend. So far it seems to be growing pretty good. Couple of small bucks walking through this morning while hunting
with my daughter.

What did you plant? Looking good and it looks like you seeded it with a planter or drill?

I planted Tecomate Monster Mix which is a chicory /clover blend. Before I planted I ran the disks over it then a drag. After that I went over it with a
cultipacker to firm up the soil. Spread the seed and went over it again with the cultipacker.

Let me know how that Monster Mix works and how it grows also. Is that a Fall planting variety?
I also noticed you have it planted in rows. That is why I asked if you had a planter because of the way the coverage looks. Just broadcasing it will give it great coverage but it will not be in rows like the way you have it. It looks good and I planted Buck foreage oats like that before in rows with a grain drill. |

Also....how is that atv/disc attachment working? How many plots did you put in?

The little set of discs are working really good. That is the only plot I planted this year all though I did use them to work up part of my yard to plant some
grass. The Monster Mix is a year round blend hopefully it will work out good. I will keep you updated on how well the plot is doing. In the spring I will start
preparing another area for a new plot.

Here's a new picture of my food plot. What a difference 3 weeks make. The deer are hammering it already. I had 8 deer out in it Saturday morning and 5 on
Sunday morning. All does and fawns. What a great feeling to see it being used after all that work.I just can't figure out why nothing is growing around the
edges of the plot.
